These Antique Maps of Brighton Allston Massachusetts came from the 1899 Atlas of Brighton Allston, Brighton Allston, and Brighton as printed by L.J. Richards. The Atlas was published in 1899 but the individual maps are dated from 1895 to 1899.

The Brighton Allston section of Boston by 1895 was a residential and industrial area. The subway system had already been developed and large sections of Brighton and Allston were either established homes or had been laid out in house lots.

Its proximity to a large population center and access to railroad yards made it a prime location for slaughtering houses. You can see on the map several large slaughtering houses including New England Dressed Meat and Wool Company, Butchers Slaughtering and Melting Association, and the Brighton Stock Yards.

By 1895 Harvard had moved across the Charles River into Allston and worked with the M.D.C. to improve the Charles River embankment and fill in Longfellow Meadow. This is now the location of the Harvard atlectic fields. Map 33 also shows subsequent land takings that became the location for the Harvard Business School.

Prior to 1895 Boston College was located in South Boston. On maps 40 you will see the extensive land holding of the St. John Ecclestical Seminary as well as the Lawrence Basin of the Chestnut Hill Basin which was filled in to become part of the current home of Boston College. Marks on map 40 seem to indicate planned land taking to increase the foot print of the MDC Water Reservivior.

Lastly, on map 34 has been marked up indicating where the Packard and Pierce Arrow auto show rooms are to be build-the start of what became the auto row section of Commonwealth Avenue. On the same map you can see a marking that indicates where the Commonwealth Armory is to be built.

These hand marking will be removed when the maps are restored-but will be left on the original maps as part of the historical record.

Each map is 22 1/2 b 32 1/2 inches in full color and shows the names of the property owners as of the publication date. Scale 200 Ft to 1 inch
